Beacon Hill Deck

Project: Beacon Hill Deck

Ipe Decking is a tropical hardwood with very attractive characteristics for outdoor use, particularly as decking.
Ipe’s heartwood is olive brown to black and usually features striping. The sapwood is much lighter, usually white or yellow.
Because Ipe requires no maintenance, is fireproof, and quite beautiful, it is the preferred wood for decks, porches and outdoor stairs.
IPE (aka. Ironwood) is one of many commercial names used for the the imposing Lapacho group of trees from the various species of Tabebuia. The trees generally grow from 140 to 150 feet, but some can reach heights of 200 feet.
Ipe is very hard and long lasting, according to the U.S. Forest service it will last 25 years in outdoor use with little degradation.
On this specific design, a steel structure was needed due to the design limitations of the existing roof lines.
Traditional pressure treated lumber was used for the under structure between the Steel I beam and C channel sections.
